Brother Martin has hired Nick Shields as the wrestling head coach.
Shields won three state championships (2006-2008 125lbs) wrestling for the Crusaders and has also been an assistant coach at Brother Martin.
Last season he was an assistant coach at Holy Cross.
Former Brother Martin head coach Robbie Dauterive spoke with Shields on April 17, the day Shields was hired.
“I think it’s pure excitment right now,” said Shields. “(I’m) ready to get rolling and kind of enforce what I think for the culture and bring that discipline and hard work into the room.”
Shields made it clear where he would start making improvements.
“My biggest goal is footwork and hand-fighting,” said Shields. “I think that’s something that is overlooked from a high school level to a college level. That’s something I can bring back.”
With 19 team wrestling state championships in school history, Shields was asked when the next state title will come.
“I’m just worried about buidling a system right now, that (state championship) will come.
Joining Dauterive and Ben DiPalma on the VSN Louisiana Wrestling Now staff this season will be Paul Klein who also enjoyed tremendous success at Brother Martin winning four individual state championships (2012-2015).
